BEWARE of locksmith companies that quote a fee of $24.00 or $29.00 This is a common tactic used by scam companies. They will tell you this is the service fee and that the "LABOR" is additional! This labor usually ends up being hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars, and they will not tell you this until they have already dome the work! Then the technician will try to bully you into paying the exorbitant fees under threats of all kinds. There have been cases where scam companies have charged elderly people as much as $1,500.00 to unlock their home!
A reputable locksmith will quote you a solid price up front or at least a ballpark range (at least this much... and not more than this much...) We quote flat rates for most services, which means you will pay what we quote you in advance plus any sales taxes. If there is a possibility that the price we quote you can increase due to some unique situation, we will tell you that in advance.
Many of these companies that answer their phones out of state will quote a very low price for their service, and then when an unlicensed and untrained technician finally shows up (if one actually does show up) will try to charge many times the original quoted price.
We repeatedly hear from our customers that they called another company and waited 3 or more hours for a locksmith to show up, and nobody ever did. We also hear repeatedly from our customers that they got locked out of their home and a locksmith from one of the above mentioned companies showed up and said he had to drill out the lock and install a new lock. A good locksmith very rarely ever has to drill a lock to open a door, and if he does it is only after spending a fair amount of time attempting to pick the lock first.
