Public Service Announcement:
Never allow anyone other than a trained automotive locksmith try to unlock your vehicle with a slim jim. A slim jim is a long flat piece of flimsy steel with cutouts on the end, see the image below. The slim jim is responsible for most cases where the lock linkages are disconnected or broken inside of car doors, not to mention possible damage to air bags that are located inside the doors of many newer vehicles.
When your linkages become broken or disconnected inside your car door after someone tries to unlock your car using a slim jim.. you will find that your key may turn in the lock but the door doesn’t lock or unlock anymore. Or you may find that you are no longer able to open the door when you operate the outer door handle. Sometimes it could be the inner door handle that no longer opens the door.
In most cases when somebody who is not an automotive locksmith technician tries to unlock your car with a slim jim and they don’t know what they are doing.. they will likely damage your vehicle costing you many times what it would have cost you if you had just called a professional automotive locksmith in the first place. If somebody walks toward your vehicle with one of these tools and they are not a licensed locksmith that you called.. tell them thanks for the offer but No Thank You!
